About

St Mary Street, Cardiff CF10 1AU

Cardiff Central Market is a gorgeous Victorian indoor market that's been the heart of Cardiff's shopping life since 1891. The ornate iron-and-glass building on St Mary Street houses a wonderful mix of traditional traders — butchers, fishmongers, record shops, pet stalls, vintage clothing, and Welsh cake bakeries — that feels delightfully old-fashioned in the best possible way. The Welsh cakes are the star — several stalls bake them fresh on griddles, and the warm, buttery, currant-studded discs are one of the great Welsh food experiences. The market also has excellent cheese shops (try Madame Fromage), good coffee, and a vinyl record section that's worth browsing. The first-floor balcony gives a great overview of the market floor. The market is right in the middle of Cardiff's main shopping area, making it easy to pop in during a city centre visit. It's the kind of place where regulars have been coming for decades and the stallholders know their names. A beautiful building, genuine traders, and Welsh cakes straight off the griddle — what more do you need?
