The New Theatre is Cardiff's principal touring theatre — a beautiful Edwardian auditorium on Park Place that has been hosting drama, musicals, opera, ballet, comedy, and pantomime since 1906. The 1,144-seat auditorium is elegant and well-proportioned, with good sightlines from most seats and the kind of traditional theatrical atmosphere that modern venues struggle to replicate. The programme is crowd-pleasing in the best sense: major West End touring productions, Welsh National Opera performances, top-name comedians, family shows, and the annual pantomime that's a Cardiff institution. It's less experimental than Chapter Arts Centre — this is where you go for the big shows. The building sits in the handsome civic centre area of Cathays Park, making it easy to combine with a pre-show dinner in the city centre (it's a 5-minute walk from the restaurants on St Mary Street and Mill Lane). The bar is basic but functional. Ticket prices are reasonable compared to London equivalents, and the stalls and dress circle offer excellent views.
