Cardiff Castle
About
Cardiff Castle is 2,000 years of history packed into one extraordinary site in the heart of the city. Roman walls, a Norman keep, and the most outrageously lavish Victorian Gothic interiors you'll ever see — all in the same complex. The 3rd Marquess of Bute was one of the richest men in the world, and he spent his fortune turning the castle apartments into a fantasy of gilded ceilings, stained glass, and hand-painted murals that make Versailles look restrained. The castle tour takes you through the Arab Room, the Banqueting Hall, the Library, and the Nursery — each one more elaborately decorated than the last. The Norman Keep on its motte gives panoramic views across the city and the surrounding hills. Below ground, the wartime tunnels used as air-raid shelters during WWII are a fascinating contrast to the opulence above. The grounds include a large lawn that hosts events throughout the year, and the castle walls run right along the main shopping streets — it's remarkable having a Roman fort in the middle of a modern city centre. Budget at least 2 hours for a proper visit. The audio guide is essential for understanding the sheer ambition of the Victorian restoration.
