The Dead Canary
About
The Dead Canary is Cardiff's best cocktail bar — and finding it is half the fun. There's no sign, no obvious entrance, just an unmarked door on Barrack Lane in the city centre that leads down to a dimly lit basement bar where some of the most inventive cocktails in Wales are served with precision and flair. The menu changes seasonally and each cocktail is described only by its ingredients, leaving the character of the drink to be discovered. The bartenders are skilled and passionate — if you tell them what you like, they'll create something perfect for you. The atmosphere is intimate and moody: exposed brick, low lighting, and the kind of quiet confidence that marks a bar at the top of its game. It's small, so booking is advisable on Friday and Saturday nights. The location in the arcade quarter means you can combine it with dinner at one of the nearby restaurants. The Dead Canary has won multiple awards and regularly appears in lists of the UK's best cocktail bars — Cardiff should be proud of this one.
