About

Leigh Woods, Bristol BS8 3QB

Leigh Woods is a 500-acre National Nature Reserve on the western side of the Avon Gorge — ancient woodland that feels a world away from the city despite being less than two miles from the centre. The reserve is managed by the National Trust and contains some of Bristol's oldest trees, including rare whitebeam species found nowhere else on earth. The network of paths winds through mixed woodland — towering oaks, beech, yew, and the gorge's characteristic limestone flora. The Nightingale Valley trail is particularly beautiful, descending steeply through the woods to the river. The views across the gorge to Clifton and the Suspension Bridge are stunning, especially in autumn when the canopy turns gold and amber. It's a popular spot for runners, dog walkers, and mountain bikers, but the reserve is large enough that you can find solitude easily. The Iron Age fort of Stokeleigh Camp, on the edge of the gorge, is a dramatic spot to sit and contemplate the landscape. Free to access, free to park (National Trust car park), and a perfect escape when the city feels too much.
