Bridge Road, Leigh Woods, Bristol BS8 3PA

Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge is Bristol's most iconic landmark — a breathtaking feat of Victorian engineering spanning the Avon Gorge 76 metres above the river. Completed in 1864 (five years after Brunel's death), it's both a working road bridge and one of the most photographed structures in England. Walking across it, with the gorge dropping away below and the Avon winding towards the Severn, is genuinely thrilling. The Visitor Centre on the Leigh Woods side tells the story of the bridge's troubled construction — Brunel won the design competition aged just 24, but funding crises and political upheaval meant the bridge took 33 years to complete. The centre is free and well done, with original drawings and engineering models. The best views of the bridge are from the Observatory on the Clifton side, or from the Giant's Cave (a natural cavern with a viewing window cut into the cliff face — small entry fee). The bridge is stunning at any time, but it's particularly magical at night when it's illuminated against the dark gorge. Leigh Woods on the far side is a beautiful ancient woodland managed by the National Trust — perfect for a post-bridge walk.
