Brighton Palace Pier
About
Brighton Palace Pier is the city's most recognisable landmark — a Victorian pleasure pier stretching out over the English Channel with fairground rides, arcade machines, fish and chips, and doughnuts. It's gloriously tacky, unpretentiously fun, and has been making people happy since 1899. The pier has three distinct zones: the arcade and food stalls near the entrance, the traditional fairground rides in the middle, and the larger thrill rides at the far end. The helter skelter, the ghost train, and the carousel are charmingly old-school. The view back towards Brighton's seafront from the end of the pier is iconic — the curving beach, the Regency terraces, and the hills of the South Downs beyond. The pier is brilliant with kids — it's the kind of place where sticky fingers, candyfloss, and two-pence machines are the whole point. Adults might enjoy it ironically at first, but the genuine pleasure of standing at the end of a Victorian pier with the sea on three sides and a bag of chips is hard to resist. Free to walk on, pay for individual rides and attractions. The remains of the old West Pier, skeletal and romantic, are visible just along the beach.
