About

Volk's Electric Railway, Madeira Drive, Brighton BN2 1EN

Volk's Electric Railway is the oldest operating electric railway in the world, running along Brighton's seafront since 1883. The little train trundles 1.25 miles along the beach from the Palace Pier to Black Rock, and riding it is a charming, slightly absurd experience — the world's first electric railway, still doing its thing 140 years later. The journey takes about 15 minutes each way, and the views are entirely of the sea on one side and the beach on the other. It's not going to thrill anyone looking for speed, but that's entirely the point — it's a gentle, nostalgic ride that connects you to a moment in transport history. The original terminal station near the Palace Pier is a tiny, characterful building. The railway runs seasonally (roughly Easter to October) and services are frequent on busy days. It's a perfect activity for families with young children — short enough to hold attention, historic enough to feel educational, and the beach is right there for afterwards. The fare is modest. Combined with the pier, it makes for a perfectly retro Brighton afternoon.
