About

Castlefield Basin, Manchester M3 4LZ

Castlefield is Manchester's original Roman settlement and its first Conservation Area — a fascinating mix of Roman ruins, Victorian railway viaducts, canal basins, and converted warehouses. The area around the canal basin is one of the most atmospheric spots in the city: narrowboats moored along the Bridgewater Canal, dramatic viaduct arches overhead, and waterside bars and restaurants that come alive on summer evenings. The reconstructed Roman fort gateway on the hillside gives a sense of Manchester's origins as the Roman settlement of Mamucium. The surrounding Victorian railway infrastructure — massive brick viaducts carrying trains overhead — creates a dramatic urban landscape. The canal towpath connects to a network of walks that can take you all the way to Worsley and beyond. The Castlefield Bowl hosts free outdoor concerts and events in summer, and the surrounding bars and restaurants (including Dukes 92 and Albert's Shed) make excellent use of the waterside setting. On a summer evening, sitting by the canal with a drink as trains rumble overhead and narrowboats glide past is pure Manchester — industrial heritage repurposed for pleasure.
