About

Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester M3 4FP

Housed in the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station (Liverpool Road Station, opened 1830), the Science and Industry Museum tells the story of Manchester's role in shaping the modern world — from the Industrial Revolution to the birth of the computer. This city invented the factory system, split the atom, and built the first stored-program computer, and this museum brings all of that to life. The permanent galleries are excellent and free. The Power Hall contains working steam engines, locomotives, and mill engines that are regularly fired up for demonstrations. The Revolution Manchester gallery charts the city's industrial heritage with real artefacts and immersive displays. The temporary exhibitions (sometimes charged) are consistently high-quality and often interactive. It's brilliant for families — there are hands-on science areas, a 4D theatre, and enough buttons to press to keep kids engaged for hours. But it's equally rewarding for adults interested in how Manchester literally changed the world. Allow 2-3 hours minimum. The museum shop is good for unusual science gifts. Free entry, though donations are appreciated.
