About

Bonnington House Steadings, Wilkieston, Edinburgh EH27 8BY

Jupiter Artland is a contemporary sculpture park set in 100 acres of meadows and woodland on the outskirts of Edinburgh, and it's one of the most extraordinary art experiences in Scotland. The collection includes major commissioned works by artists including Charles Jencks (whose massive landform sculptures reshape the landscape itself), Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Cornelia Parker, and Andy Goldsworthy. What makes Jupiter Artland special is the way the art is integrated into the landscape — you don't view these works in a white gallery, you discover them on winding paths through woodland, beside lochs, in clearings. Some are monumental, others intimate and easily missed. The Jencks landforms alone — enormous sculpted earth mounds and pools — are worth the trip. Allow at least 2-3 hours to explore properly. It's about 30 minutes west of Edinburgh by car (limited public transport, though there's a shuttle bus on some days — check the website). Open seasonally from May to September. The café is good and the shop sells work by Scottish artists. It feels like a day trip to another world, just outside the city.
